Rebel Minds: Voices of Women in Science

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, on February 11, 2026, at the PACTA Salone theater space in Milan, the performance INTELLIGENZE RIBELLI: IL TEATRO DELLE SCIENZIATE was held. The initiative, promoted by the Associazione Maddmaths! together with PACTA dei Teatri, under the patronage of the Unione Matematica Italiana, made use of the collaboration with several universities and scientific institutions including the Politecnico di Milano, the Università Statale di Milano, Bicocca, the University of Trento, INAF – Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, and CNR.

The performance was a sequence of stories of great women of science – Vera Rubin, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Karen Uhlenbeck, Katherine Johnson, Marilyn vos Savant, Katsuko Saruhashi, Lynn Margulis, Elseline Hoekzema – and of female experiences in the scientific world.

Representing the Department of Mathematics of the Politecnico di Milano, Federico Girotti brought to the stage a text written in collaboration with Margherita Zanella and dedicated to the figure of Marilyn vos Savant. The authors were inspired by the event that made the Monty Hall problem popular: its (correct?) solution in the Parade column “Ask Marilyn” and the strong response that followed and that involved, also personally, the figure of Marilyn vos Savant.
