Francesco Brioschi: an unexpected meeting with the father of the Politecnico
Francesco Brioschi, founder of the Polytechnic and a mathematician by training, undertook in 1858 with his student Felice Casorati and Enrico Betti a study trip to the capitals of European science of the time: Göttingen, Berlin, Paris. This trip marked not only the emergence of Italian mathematics but was also a fundamental experience for the planning of the future Higher Technical Institute for the training of engineers.

From 1866 Brioschi directed "Il Politecnico", a magazine founded by Carlo Cattaneo in 1846, whose publication was then suspended when he went into exile in Lugano. His editorial management maintained the initial intent: to provide readers with original studies and in-depth reviews on the most disparate topics, from exact sciences to literary criticism, to promote technical-scientific and civil progress.
