Il Prof. Alfio Quarteroni ha ricevuto un ERC Advanced Grant denominato iHeart per organizzare al MOX un gruppo di ricerca sulla simulazione numerica del funzionamento del cuore. Il progetto ha ricevuto un finanziamento di 2.35 milioni di Euro e durerà cinque anni. L'obiettivo  è lo sviluppo di modelli numerici affidabili che possano fornire strumenti direttamente utilizzabili in ambito clinico.

in subdomains $\Omega$ of the round unit sphere $S^N \subset {\mathbb R}^{N+1}$, where $\Delta$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $S^N$. We call a subdomain $\Omega$ of $S^N$ a Serrin
domain if it admits a solution of this overdetermined problem. In our main result, we construct Serrin domains in $S^N$, $N \ge 2$ which bifurcate from symmetric straight tubular neighborhoods of the
equator. By this we complement recent rigidity results for Serrin domains on the sphere. This is joint work with M.M.Fall and I.A.Minlend (AIMS Senegal).

• Abstract
Computing the distinct solutions $u$ of an equation $f(u, \lambda) = 0$ as a parameter $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$ is varied is a central task in applied mathematics and engineering. The solutions are captured in a bifurcation diagram, plotting (some functional of) $u$ as a function of $\lambda$. In this talk I will present a new algorithm, deflated continuation, for this task. Deflated continuation has three advantages. First, it is capable of computing disconnected bifurcation diagrams; previous algorithms only aimed to compute that part of the bifurcation diagram continuously connected to the initial data.
Second, its implementation is extremely simple: it only requires a minor modification to any existing Newton-based solver. Third, it can scale to very large discretisations if a good preconditioner is available. Among other problems, we will apply this to a famous singularly perturbed ODE, Carrier’s problem. The computations reveal a striking and beautiful bifurcation diagram, with an infinite sequence of alternating pitchfork and fold bifurcations as the singular perturbation parameter tends to zero. The analysis yields a novel and complete taxonomy of the solutions to the problem. We will also apply it to discover previously unknown solutions to equations arising in liquid crystals and quantum mechanics.

• I am an Associate Professor of Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing and EPSRC Early Career Research Fellow in the Numerical Analysis group of the University of Oxford, and a Tutorial Fellow at Oriel College, Oxford. I work on the numerical solution of partial differential equations, with a particular focus on bifurcation analysis of nonlinear equations, the automated derivation and application of adjoint models, and the interaction between computational geometry and numerical simulation. I apply the numerical techniques I develop to various applications, including tidal turbines for renewable energy, bidomain cardiac electrophysiology, radiation transport, and glaciology. I mainly code in Python, contribute regularly to the FEniCS and PETSc software projects, and lead the development of dolfin-adjoint.

We consider the sharp interface limit for the Allen-Cahn equation on the three dimensional torus with deterministic initial condition and deterministic or stochastic forcing terms. In the deterministic case, we discuss the convergence of solutions to the mean curvature flow, possibly with a forcing term, in the spirit of the pioneering work of Tom Ilmanen (JDG ’93). In addition we analyze the convergence of the corresponding action functionals to a limiting functional described in terms of varifolds. In the second part I will comment on related results for the stochastic case, describing how this limiting functional enters in the large deviation asymptotics for the laws of the corresponding processes in the joint sharp interface and small noise limit.

• Abstract
For a bounded domain in a Riemannian manifold, we consider the solution of the heat equation with unit initial data and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Integrating the solution with respect to the space variable one obtains the function of time known in the literature as the “heat content” of the given domain. In this talk we show how the geometry of the boundary affects heat diffusion by examining the small time behavior of the heat content. In particular, we study a three term asymptotic expansion for polyhedral Euclidean domains, and give a recursive algorithm for the calculation of the entire asymptotic series when the boundary is smooth.

• Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), Smart Contracts and Cryptocurrencies are attracting a lot of attention from the finance community. The incipit was the blockchain&bitcoin phenomenon but then the DLT technologies and Smart Contracts became a hot topic per se for the potentialities in the financial intermediation, payment system and trading/post-trading industry, cryptocurrencies became an investment class. The conference proposes a self-contained journey on these topics. First of all, it provides a tutorial for people who want to know more about DLT and smart contracts starting from zero. Then the three sessions cover different topics: technical issues related to the potentialities of these technologies and tools (governance, smart contracts models, oracles role, voting systems); a deep dive on the economics and finance of DLT and smart contracts (game theoretic issues, investment, modeling of cryptocurrencies, digital cash, ICO market); a look at the applications to financial markets going beyond proofs of concept (trading and post trading industry, law issues, disintermediation).

• Abstract
Discontinuous finite element methods have been gaining in popularity for large scale geophysical applications. They are also a natural environment to take advantage of adaptive approaches in which the degree of the approximating polynomials is chosen locally and dynamically, in order to minimize memory occupation and computational cost. However, this poses major challenges to the parallel efficiency of the resulting methods, since a greater effort to achieve optimal load balancing is required. At present, no general HPC infrastructure for efficient and natively adaptive implementation of DG methods on massively parallel is available.The purpose of this joint research with G. Tumolo of ICTP Trieste is to move towards the development of such a tool especially tailored for the simulation of fluid dynamics problems in climate dynamics, oceanography and volcanology.

• Abstract
We say that an algebraic variety is unirational if it can be parametrized by rational functions, rational if moreover the parametrization can be chosen to be one-to-one. A very classical problem, called nowadays the Luroth problem, asks whether a unirational variety is necessarily rational. This holds for curves (Luroth, 1875) and for surfaces (Castelnuovo, 1894); after various unsuccessful attempts, it was shown in 1971 that the answer is quite negative in dimension 3: there are many examples of unirational varieties which are not rational. Up to 3 years ago the known examples in dimension >3 were quite particular, but a new idea of Claire Voisin has significantly improved the situation. I will survey the colorful history of the problem, then explain Voisin’s idea, and how it leads to a number of new results.

“Maximally writhed real algebraic knots and links”

The Alexander-Briggs tabulation of knots in R^3 (started almost
a century ago, and considered as one of the most traditional ones
in classical Knot Theory) is based on the minimal number of crossings
for a knot diagram. From the point of view of Real Algebraic Geometry
it is more natural to consider knots in RP^3 rather than R^3, and use
a different number also serving as a measure of complexity of a knot:
the minimal degree of a real algebraic curve representing this knot.

As it was noticed by Oleg Viro about 20 years ago, the writhe of a knot
diagram becomes an invariant of a knot in the real algebraic set-up,
and corresponds to a Vassiliev invariant of degree 1. In the talk we’ll
survey these notions, and consider the knots with the maximal possible
writhe for its degree. Surprisingly, it turns out that there is a unique
maximally writhed knot in RP^3 for every degree d. Furthermore, this
real algebraic knot type has a number of characteristic properties, from
the minimal number of diagram crossing points (equal to d(d-3)/2) to
the minimal number of transverse intersections with a plane (equal to
d-2). Based on a series of joint works with Stepan Orevkov.

• Abstract
Linear matrix equations arise in an amazingly growing number of applications. Classically, they have been extensively encountered in Control theory and eigenvalue problems. More recently they have been shown to provide a natural platform in the discretization of certain partial differential equations (PDEs), both in the deterministic setting, and in the presence of uncertainty in the data. We first review some numerical techniques for solving various classes of large scale linear matrix equations commonly occurring in applications. Then we focus on recent developments in the solution of (systems of) linear matrix equations associated with the numerical treatment of various stochastic PDE problems.

• Abstract
Cardiac contraction originates at a subcellular – molecular, indeed – scale, within specific components of the cardiomyocytes (i.e. cardiac cells) called sarcomeres. This contractile behaviour then needs to be integrated at the organ level, namely, with a specific structure and shape. Furthermore, this organ crucially interacts with other physiological systems, the first of which being blood circulation via the cardiac function itself, and also the nervous system that controls the heart via various regulation mechanisms, and these interactions must be adequately represented in order to obtain accurate and predictive model simulations. This presentation will provide an overview of the recent advances on cardiac modeling achieved in the M3DISIM group, with a particular focus on the key multiscale, multi-physics and integrated system modeling aspects that need to be addressed, with many associated challenges pertaining to numerical methods and model validation, in particular.

• Dominique Chapelle is a senior researcher at Inria – in the M3DISIM research team also affiliated with Ecole Polytechnique – and the head of science of the Inria Saclay-Ile-de-France research center. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique, MIT, and Paris 6 University, with a dual background in applied mathematics and engineering. His areas of expertise are in mechanical modeling and numerical analysis, with a focus on cardiac modeling developed over the past 15 years

• Abstract
When considering the modeling of the cardiovascular system and more specifically the heart, there is a need for the personalization of not only the geometry but various aspects of the physical model: uncertain initial conditions, constitutive parameters or boundary conditions. Indeed, identifying key parameters – using measurements of a type that is available in medical imaging – can provide patient specific simulations that can be used by clinicians in their diagnosis. In other engineering fields where large amounts of data are available – like weather forecasting or climatology – it is now common to tackle these uncertainties in the models by data assimilation procedures – variational (4D-var) or sequential (Kalman like). In this context, our objective is to propose and analyze data assimilation methods adapted to the specificity of the biomechanical systems considered and to the available data, in particular image sequences.

• Abstract
A major challenge in the age of Big Data is the integration of disparate data types into a data analysis. That is tackled here in the context of data blocks measured on a common set of experimental subjects. This data structure motivates the simultaneous exploration of the joint and individual variation within each data block. This is done here in a way that scales well to large data sets (with blocks of wildly disparate size), using principal angle analysis, careful formulation of the underlying linear algebra, and differing outputs depending on the analytical goals. Ideas are illustrated using mortality, cancer and neuroimaging data sets.

• Dr.James Stephen Marron is the Amos Hawley Distinguished Professor in UNC’s Department of Statistics and Operations Research as well as a professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Marron is widely recognized as a world research leader in the statistical disciplines of high dimensional, functional and object oriented data analysis, as well as data visualization. He has made broad major contributions ranging from the invention of innovative new statistical methods, through software development and on to statistical and mathematical theory.
His research continues with a number of ongoing deep, interdisciplinary research collaborations with colleagues in Computer Science, Genetics, Medicine, Mathematics and Biology. A special strength is his strong record of mentoring graduate students, postdocs and junior faculty, in both statistics and also related disciplinary fields.
