PoliFusion, sviluppato dal Dipartimento di Matematica in cooperazione con lo EPFL, è un software di validazione numerica della tritium breeding blanket, componente base dei reattori nucleari a fusione in corso di sviluppo in Europa e USA.
Il progetto PoliFusion ha vinto l'edizione 2023 di #Switch2Product, l'Innovation Challenge di Politecnico di Milano PoliHub - Innovation Park & Startup Accelerator e Deloitte per le soluzioni innovative, nuove tecnologie e idee di business di studenti, ricercatori, dottorandi di ricerca, docenti e alumni del #Polimi.
Politecnico di Milano, al quale va un ringraziamento speciale, ha assegnato al progetto un grant S2P da 30 mila euro destinato alle attività di prototipazione e validazione e #PoliHub lo ha incluso nel proprio percorso specifico di accelerazione imprenditoriale e tecnologica, in partenza dal prossimo gennaio.

The GADeS 2023 prize was awarded by the AIMETA group of the same name (AIMETA Dynamics and Stability Group) to Davide Riccobeli for the best doctoral thesis on dynamics and stability topics with the following motivation: “in recognition of the outstanding contribution in the mathematical modeling of soft and active bodies and in the analysis of their elastic instability phenomena”.
NUMBERS & STORIES - NEW DIRECTIONS FOR CLIMATE STORYLINES & SCENARIOS
The aim of "Numbers and Stories" (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZxvaB5cnkWKSaqGhW6dqPJZCMX6AMafL/view?usp=sharing) is to survey and discuss new directions in climate change research, with an interdisciplinary approach. The theme of the workshop revolves around the use of qualitative and quantitative methods in climate change research, most importantly the development and use of scenarios for emission and decarbonization pathways, the storyline approach to detection and attribution of extreme weather events, and their repercussions for climate policy under deep uncertainty. Scenarios are key tools for depicting future climate and play a key role in assessments such as those of the IPCC. As the community looks forward to developing the next generation of scenarios, it is important to discuss which elements should be included in the narrative and operationalized in the qualitative and quantitative assessments. The workshop is planned as a full-day event with individual talks on Storylines in the morning and Scenarios/Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) in the afternoon. We will end with a panel discussion focused on the recent AR6 IPCC report with invited panelists, speakers and the organizing/scientific committee.
The second meeting of the project ``Securing safe drinking water distribution'' SafeCREW (https://safecrew.org/), funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe program, took place in Milan on 10, 11 and 12th May. SafeCREW aims to develop tools and guidelines for disinfected and non-disinfected drinking water supply systems; the project focuses on disinfection process, its consequences, the minimization of disinfectant dosages and the formation of disinfection by-products.SafeCREW partnership includes 11 European organizations in Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Spain. Politecnico di Milano brings in SafeCREW multidisciplinary skills in environmental engineering, chemistry, statistics and machine learning from four departments: DICA (prof. Manuela Antonelli), DCMC (prof. Carlo Punta), DMAT (prof. Ilenia Epifani) and DEIB (prof. Francesco Trovò).

Filippo Gazzola and Gianmarco Sperone have been awarded with the 2022 edition of the “Fichera Prize”, granted by the Italian Mathematical Union “to the authors of a scientific publication of great value in the field of Mathematical Analysis and its Applications, preferably in sectors cultivated by Professor Gaetano Fichera”. The awarded publication is Steady Navier–Stokes Equations in Planar Domains with Obstacle and Explicit Bounds for Unique Solvability, Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis 238, 1283–1347 (2020).
The prize will be officially delivered on the morning of September 4th 2023, at the opening ceremony of the XXII Congress of the Italian Mathematical Union to be held in Pisa.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
James Maynard is a brilliant young mathematician whose fundamental contributions to development of analytic number theory have gained him well deserved and ever increasing acclaim. In the same year (2013) as completing his Ph.D at the University of Oxford, under the direction of Roger Heath-Brown, he published an independent proof of Yitang Zhang's theorem about the existence of infinity many primes with bounded gap.
After this first and already fundamental contribution to the theory of prime numbers, Maynard rapidly produced a sequence of acclaimed results in this arena: in 2014 he resolved another longstanding conjecture of Erdös on large gaps between primes (which earned him the highest valued Erdös prize to date): in 2016 he showed that, for any given decimal digit, there are infinitely many prime numbers that avoiding that digit in their decimal expansion, and in 2019, together with Dimitris Koukoulopoulos, Maynard proved the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture.
This rapid sequence of achievements have earned Maynard numerous awards, including the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize (2014), the Whitehead Prize (2015), the EMS Prize (2016), and finally the Fields Medal 2022 for "contributions to analytic number theory, which have led to major advances in the understanding of the structure of prime numbers and in Diophantine approximation". Maynard is currently a Fellow of St. Johns College and Research Professor of Mathematics, a position he has held since 2017. These achievements are especially impressive in light of his youth.

The Mathematics Department of the Politecnico di Milano: Department of Excellence
The Department of Mathematics of the Politecnico di Milano is one of the 11 departments belonging to Italian public universities to be funded as “Department of Excellence” in the Area 01.
The ranking, published on December 28, has been established by a committee formed by 7 internationally recognized scientists that chose the projects submitted by the best departments, which were previously selected through a preliminary ranking based on the evaluation of the quality of research.
Such a prestigious award comes in addition to the result obtained within the QS World University Rankings for Mathematics 2022, which placed the Department of Mathematics of the Politecnico di Milano as the first one among the Italian departments in the same academic subject.
