Challenges of numerical modelling of the atmosphere dynamics on spherical polygonal grids

In this talk we will discuss, from a historical perspective, the evolution of the numerical modelling of atmosphere dynamics and its application to weather forecasting and climate simulations. Challenges of a recent generation of models, mostly those based on spherical polygonal grids, will be presented with examples and results of existing open problems on mathematical and numerical aspects.
