Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation Driven by a Recovery-Based Error Estimator for Shallow Water Flow Modeling | Abstract | | Focus of the paper is to propose an e ffective anisotropic mesh adaptation procedure for the solution of the shallow water equations. The hyperbolic partial di fferential equation system is solved via the streamline diff usion
finite element method, suitably corrected by a shock capturing contribution.
The proposed adaptation procedure relies on a recovery-based error estimator. In particular we look for an anisotropic error estimator able to
select not only the size, but also the shape and the orientation of the mesh elements, with the aim of optimizing the computational advantages yielded by mesh adaptation. The robustness of the proposed estimator is tested fi rst in a purely diffusive setting and then on two steady shallow water problems, with known analytical solution. Finally we discuss the reliability
of the adaptation procedure on a real-scale unsteady confi guration. |

Robust numerical approximation of coupled Stokes and Darcy flows applied to vascular hemodynamics and biochemical transport | Abstract | | The fully coupled description of blood flow and mass transport in blood vessels requires extremely robust numerical methods. In order to handle the heterogeneous coupling between blood flow and plasma filtration, addressed by
means of Navier-Stokes and Darcy’s equations, we need to develop a numerical scheme capable to deal with extremely variable parameters, such as the blood viscosity and Darcy’s permeability of the arterial walls.
In this paper, we describe a finite element method for the approximation of incompressible flow coupled problems. We exploit stabilized mixed finite elements together with Nitsche type matching conditions that automatically
adapt to the coupling of different combinations of coefficients. We study in details the stability of the method using weighted norms, emphasizing the robustness of the stability estimate with respect to the coefficients. We also
consider an iterative method to split the coupled heterogeneous problem in possibly homogeneous local problems, and we investigate the spectral properties of suitable preconditioners for the solution of the global as well as local
problems.
Finally, we present the simulation of the fully coupled blood flow and plasma filtration problems on a realistic geometry of a cardiovascular artery
after the implantation of a drug eluting stent (DES). A similar finite element method for mass transport is then employed to study the evolution of the drug released by the DES in the blood stream and in the arterial walls, and the role of plasma filtration on the drug deposition is investigated.

A Class of Domain Decomposition Preconditioners for hp-Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods | Abstract | | In this article we address the question of efficiently solving the algebraic linear system of equations arising from the discretization of a symmetric, elliptic boundary value problem using hp-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods. In particular, we introduce a class of domain decomposition preconditioners based on the Schwarz framework, and prove bounds on the condition number of the resulting iteration operators. Numerical results con rming the theoretical estimates are also presented. |

Theoretical study and numerical simulation of textiles | Abstract | | We propose a new approach for developing continuum models fit to describe the mechanical behavior of textiles. We develop a physically mo-
tivated model, based on the properties of the yarns, which can predict and simulate the textile behavior. The approach relies on the selection of a suitable topological model for the patch of the textile, coupled with constitutive models for the yarn behavior. The textile structural con guration is related to the deformation through an energy functional, which depends on both the macroscopic deformation and the distribution of internal nodes.
We determine the equilibrium positions of these latter, constrained to an assigned macroscopic deformation. As a result, we derive a macroscopic
strain energy function, which reflects the possibly nonlinear character of the yarns as well as the anisotropy induced by the microscopic topological pattern. By means of both analytical estimates and numerical experiments, we show that our model is well suited for both academic test cases and real industrial textiles, with particular emphasis on the tricot textile.

On computing upper and lower bounds on the outputs of linear elasticity problems approximated by the smoothed finite element method | Abstract | | Verification of the computation of local quantities of interest, e.g. the displacements at a point, the stresses in a local area and the stress intensity factors at crack tips, plays an important role in improving the structural design
for safety. In this paper, the smoothed finite element method (SFEM) is used for finding upper and lower bounds on the local quantities of interest that are outputs of the displacement field for linear elasticity problems,
based on bounds on strain energy in both the primal and dual problems.
One important feature of SFEM is that it bounds the strain energy of the structure from above without needing the solutions of different subproblems that are based on elements or patches but only requires the direct finite element computation. Upper and lower bounds on two linear outputs and one quadratic output related with elasticity – the local reaction, the local displacement, and the J-integral – are computed by the proposed method in two different examples. Some issues with SFEM that remain to be resolved are also discussed. |

Finite Element Approximation of the Sobolev Constant | Abstract | | Denoting by $S$ the sharp constant in the Sobolev inequality in $W^{1,2}_0(B)$, being $B$ the unit ball in $R3$, and denoting by $S_h$ its approximation in a suitable finite element space, we show that $S_h$ converges to $S$ as $h->0$ with a polynomial rate of convergence. We provide both an upper and a lower bound on the rate of convergence, and present some numerical results. |
