The Department of Mathematics is the reference entity for the Degree Course in Mathematical Engineering of the Polytechnic of Milan. The course of study is organized in two cycles (three-year degree and master's degree), at the end of the second the master's degree in Mathematical Engineering is awarded. The figure of the mathematical engineer combines in-depth skills in mathematics (mathematical analysis, algebra and geometry, probability and statistics, numerical methods, mathematical physics) with competencies that come from the engineering fields, physics, chemistry, information technology, economics. The mathematical engineer is able to combine the knowledge of methods with models to address real-life problems.

In the national and European landscape, the course is a pioneer. The course of study is divided into three main tracks (Computational science and computational learning, Statistical learning, Quantitative finance) as well as numerous opportunities to build a personalized training path also in collaboration with other degree courses.

The training offer of the Department is completed by the PhDs in Mathematical Methods and Models for Engineering and Data Analytics & Decisions Science which offer the possibility of completing the training experience and starting the research activity.

It is also possible to study at the Department of Mathematics following one of the master's degrees that are offered in collaboration with the Graduate School of Management of the Polytechnic of Milan: Master in Quantitative Finance and the International Master in Fintech, Finance and Digital Innovation.
