The "Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano" was officially inaugurated on 9 February 1927, following the constitution of its first Executive Council (27 November 1926).
The Seminar was established in collaboration between universities of Milan with the aim of spreading mathematical and physical knowledge and promoting studies and research in these fields.
The work of the Seminar consists of conferences, congresses, lectures and other activities addressed to its stated aims.

The "Seminar" has its official residence at the Department of Mathematics "Francesco Brioschi" of the Polytechnic School of Milan and runs its activities at the University of Milan, University of Milano-Bicocca and the Polytechnic School of Milan.

The Seminar also sponsors scientific activities consistent with its institutional aims and organized at other locations.
The lectures of the Seminar are published in "Rendiconti del Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano" (1927-2000).
In 2001 the Rendiconti del Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano was reborn as the Milan Journal of Mathematics, or MJM, edited by Birkhauser. This new journal publishes conferences of the Seminar, proceedings of meetings promoted by the Seminar and original articles.
