AbstractThis work deals with numerical simulation in the haemodinamic field. We test a multiscale mathematical model of network of the arteries using LifeV, a finite element library developed by Politecnico di Milano (MOX) in Italy, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (CMCS) in Switzerland and INRIA(BANG) in France and released under license LGPL. The mathematical model consists of a onedimensional model for the big and medium arteries, coupled with a zerodimensional model i.e. a lumped parameter model. Lumped parameters describe the effect on pulse wave propagation of the wall compliance, the fluid resistance and inertia of the small arteries, arterioles and capillaries. We used these mathematical model to do a numerical simulation of the circle of Willis which is the main collateral pathway in cerebral circulation, these simulations reproduce properly the physiological and pathological behaviour of the arteries. In general the use of this mathematical model can help in understanding how the different surgical solutions or pathological sitauations may affect blood circulation and guide the choice of the most appropriate procedure for a specific patient. Keywords: 1-D blood flow modelling, windkessel model, pulse wave propagation, circle of Willis.
