AbstractIn this work we devise, analyze and implement numerical methods for continuum-mechanics problems. The methods considered are closely related to mixed and hybrid methods on the one hand and to more recent discontinuous Galerkin methods on the other hand. In particular, we present and analyze two original formulations, the first called Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method and the second Dual Mixed Hybrid Method. This latter formulation is a unified approach able to treat in the same framework the compressible elasticity problems and the incompressible Stokes equations. As a relevant application, the Dual Mixed Hybrid Method is adopted to carry out the stress mechanical analysis for the simulation of the thermal oxidation process in semiconductor technology. Numerical results for oxidation on a realistic device are also presented, including a discussion on the mathematical and numerical modeling and on the computer implementation of the whole coupled oxidation problem.
